The Keys2drive program comprises three central initiatives:
- The free lesson – Keys2drive provides a free lesson, introducing our innovative approach for learner drivers in Australia.
- Accreditation of driving instructors – Keys2drive is a professional development and accreditation program for the driving instruction industry. More and more instructors will gain access to these techniques.
- Online Support – the Keys2drive website is a rich central portal of information and advice. It is designed to guide learner drivers, parents/supervisors and driving instructors through the learning experience.
Each element of the program will be closely evaluated for effectiveness and improved continuously over the coming years.
The Free Key2drive Lesson Overview
The free lesson goes for 60 minutes, during which the Keys2drive Lisa will explain the Keys2drive learning approach – ‘Find Your Own Way’ – and offer examples of how it can be used when learning to drive. The remaining lesson time includes a practical demonstration of these skills being used and taught, and you will be driving.

What to expect?
The Keys2drive free lesson is not intended to replace normal driving lessons; rather, it should complement them by empowering learner drivers to becoming safer P Plate drivers.
What are Eligibility Requirements?
The learner driver must hold an Australian learner’s permit
The learner driver’s fully-licensed supervising driver (normally mum, dad, family member or a friend) must attend the entire 60-minute Keys2drive free lesson
Overseas licence holders upgrading to an Australian licence are not eligible for a Keys2drive free lesson
If you have ever held a full driver’s licence in Australia OR overseas, then you are not eligible for the Keys2drive free lesson
If a learner driver’s supervising driver holds a full international licence they may attend the free lesson with their learner. However we strongly recommend checking with your state’s licensing authority to ensure you are legally allowed to supervise a learner driver in Australia or you may risk prosecution.
P-plate drivers upgrading from automatic to manual are not eligible for a Keys2drive free lesson
When should I have the lesson?
The Keys2drive free lesson can even be a very valuable lesson when you think you are ready to pass the test. At this stage the Driving Instructor may use the Keys2drive P Plate ready indicator to help the learner and supervisor assess whether they are really P Plate ready.
Who is the free lesson for?
The free lesson is for anyone on their L Plates, together with their parent/supervisor (the supervisor is the fully licensed driver who usually accompanies the learner when they drive).
Only learner drivers who have never driven solo before are currently eligible to apply.
To be eligible for a Keys2drive free lesson the learner driver MUST hold an Australian learners permit. Holders of international driving permits upgrading to an Australian licence are NOT eligible for a Keys2drive free lesson.
